more info…

Viagra has already helped millions of men in America that are suffering from erectile dysfunction. Unfortunately there are certain risk factors associated with Viagra as there are with any other type of medication. One side effect that should be considered very serious is priapism; priapism is when a man experiences an erection lasting longer than four hours.

Viagra

Viagra also called the little blue pill, and sildenafil citrate, is a medication taken only by men that are experiencing either erectile dysfunction or pulmonary hypertension. Viagra has proven that is more that capable to treat erectile dysfunction. Viagra works by releasing nitric oxide into the blood stream; the nitric oxide relaxes the smooth muscle in the penis and increases blood flow to the penis. With the smooth muscle relaxed, the blood is able to reach the penis easier and more efficiently. This allows the penis to become hard and elongated, once this happens the man can enjoy sexual intercourse and receive maximum pleasure.

Viagra can also help men experiencing hypertension, or high blood pressure. The nitric oxide in Viagra effectively lowers blood pressure to help increase blood flow. Men with low blood pressure should not take Viagra because it could cause a serious drop in blood pressure which will cause fainting and stroke.

Priapism

Priapism is when the penis does not return to its relaxed state for four hours even if there is no sexual stimulation happening. Blood is trapped inside of the penis and is unable to drain. Priapism is usually painful and occurs when a medication for erectile dysfunction is taken, this is called low flow priapism. Priapism is not common but is a side effect of most erectile dysfunction medications including Viagra.

Priapism can occur when the penis has been hit hard; the blood vessels inside will burst and cause an erection that won’t go away for four hours or more this is called high flow priapism. This type of priapism is usually not painful and is treated with an ice pack and goes away within about fifteen minutes.

Treatments for priapism

Priapism is considered a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment or it could result in permanent loss of function and even gangrene; if gangrene occurs, the penis will have to be amputated. Some treatments for priapism include surgery, injections, surgical shunts, and aspiration.

Surgery

Surgery is used in cases where an artery has been ruptured; the doctor will open the penis and tie off the artery that is causing the priapism so that the blood flow can become normal.

Intracavernous injections

Intracavernous injections are used for men with low flow priapism which is priapism that occurs in healthy men that have taken a drug illegal or legal with priapism as a side effect. During the treatment of intracavernous injections a drug is injected into the penis that causes the blood veins to narrow and reduces the blood flow to the penis and eases the swelling in the penis.

Surgical Shunt

This is also used for low flow priapism, a shunt is surgically inserted into the penis to divert the blood flow and allow the blood flow to return to normal.

Aspiration

Doctors will numb the penis and insert a needle into it and drain the blood from the penis to reduce the pressure and swelling.

Priapism only occurs in a small amount of men taking an erectile dysfunction medication like Viagra. Priapism should be considered a medical emergency and should be treated immediately.
