When we hear the word Viagra (sildenafil citrate) we often think of erectile dysfunction (ED) and are almost certain that Viagra only treats ED and nothing else. Sildenafil can treat others diseases as well such as pulmonary hypertension, altitude sickness and some athletes even use it to help with their performance on the field.
Sexual Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction is what sildenafil is most commonly used for. When a man cannot achieve an erection, or it is difficult for him to, it is due to improper blood flow to the penis. The corpus cavernosum are cigar shaped tubes inside of the penis. The blood needs to flow inside these tubes quickly in order for the penis to become erect. If the corpus cavernosum is constricted, blood will not be able to enter the penis properly.
Sildenafil citrate contains nitric oxide that helps the smooth muscle inside the penis to relax allowing blood to flow into the corpus cavernosum making the penis become elongated and rigid. Sildenafil allows the man to have an erection long enough to get sexual pleasure.
Sildenafil for Altitude Sickness
Sildenafil Citrate has recently been tested to prevent and treat high altitude pulmonary edema associated with altitude sickness. This is most common in mountain climbers especially those already suffering from heart and lung problems. The thinner air and higher altitudes can cause the blood vessels to constrict. When this happens in the lungs, the constriction of blood vessels can put force on the heart, leading to heart failure. The higher altitude can also cause blood vessels in the lungs to leak fluid and build up in the lung, which interferes with the oxygen exchange.
Sildenafil citrate works by relaxing the blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow through the vessels. Researchers used sildenafil to block the effects of high altitude on blood vessels on the lung. Many tests have been conducted to see if sildenafil can in fact prevent and treat pulmonary edema and most have been successful though the drug has not been marketed to treat it.
Sildenafil for Pulmonary Hypertension
Sildenafil citrate is also effective in the disease pulmonary arterial hypertension or PAH. Sildenafil relaxes the arterial wall making the pulmonary arterial resistance and pressure much lower. Reducing pressure will then reduce the workload of the right ventricle of the heart and improves symptoms of right sided heart failure. Pfizer was approved by the FDA for treatment of pulmonary hypertension in 2005 and is marketed under a different name in order to avoid confusion with Viagra.
Why some athletes use Sildenafil Citrate for enhanced Performance
As explained earlier, sildenafil allows for more blood flow in the body, some athletes take it to open their blood vessels and in turn enrich their muscles and create a better oxygen exchange. Taking sildenafil citrate has not been banned from being used in sports events and also has not been proved to help athletes in any way though many tests have been conducted.
Sildenafil is most commonly used for erectile dysfunction but was originally created to help high blood pressure. It has been proven to help ED as well as Pulmonary Hypertension in some people, but others continue to believe it will help them with other ailments as well though nothing has been proven.
