Sildenafil citrate is more commonly known as Viagra, is used to treat erectile dysfunction as well as pulmonary hypertension and some other medical problems. Today it is one of the most widely known treatments for ED.
How much Sildenafil should I take?
Always speak with your doctor and give a history of all medical problems so he can decide what dosage is best for you. The most common dosages are between 25-100mg. The pill is blue and diamond shaped with the name of the company that invented sildenafil on its side. The other side of the pill reads “VGR xx” the xx stands for 25 50 or 100 mg. The pill is not taken more that once per day between 30 minutes and 4 hours prior to sexual intercourse.
The dosage for pulmonary arterial hypertension in 20mg three times a day. These pills are given a different name to avoid confusion with Viagra.
Sildenafil Citrate Side effects
As with taking any type of drug there are side effects to taking sildenafil citrate. They include headache, flushing, dyspepsia, nasal congestion and impaired vision. Some sildenafil users have complained of seeing everything tinted blue, and some of blurred vision.
Headaches
A headache obviously consists of pain in the head, back and neck pain has also been associated with headaches. There are many things that can trigger a headache such as tension, eye strain and dehydration.
Flushing
Flushing is when a person’s face turns red, not to be confused with blushing which is much milder. Flushing is also a symptom of carcinoid syndrome which is when hormones are secreted into the systemic circulation.
Dyspepsia
Dyspepsia is more commonly known as indigestion which is reoccurring pain in the upper abdomen, feeling of fullness in the upper abdomen and felling full faster than normal when eating. This can also be accompanied by nausea, belching and heartburn.
Nasal Congestion
Nasal congestion is the blockage of the nasal passages due to the membranes being swollen from inflamed blood vessels.
Impaired vision
Some people complain of impaired vision when taking sildenafil such as photophobia which is blurred vision, cyanopsia has also been reported which is seeing everything in a blue tint. This can also occur when a cataract is removed from the eye and usually lasts anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Other types of vision impairment associated with sildenafil are loss of peripheral vision and nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy with involves loss of vision due to damaging of the optic nerve from insufficient blood supply.
Other possibly dangerous side effects
There are a few more side effects that can be dangerous including Priapism. Priapism is a painful medical condition in which the erect penis doesn’t return to its relaxed state. If an erection lasts for more than four hours, it is considered a medical emergency. Hypotension is another side effect with is the lowering of blood pressure, myocardial infarction or heat attack, is another side effect along with stroke, intraocular pressure, ventricular arrhythmias and sudden hearing loss.
As indicated above there are some risks to taking sildenafil but, if you are healthy enough and a doctor has prescribed sildenafil it can provide great results.
