Sildenafil citrate is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. It is sold as Viagra and Revatio as well as under other brand names. The drug became available in 1998 and has been used among men for erectile dysfunction as well as some other types of medical problems such as pulmonary hypertension and altitude sickness. Sildenafil can also be used for non medical reasons as well.

The Creation of Sildenafil

Sildenafil citrate was made by a group of pharmaceutical chemists at Pfizer’s research facility in England. It was studied to aid in hypertension or high blood pressure, and angina pectoris which is a symptom of heart disease.
The first trials of the sildenafil citrate were conducted in Morrison Hospital in Swansea. The clinical trials showed that the drug didn’t have much of an effect on angina, but that it did have a large effect on penile erections. Pfizer then decided to market it for erectile dysfunction instead of angina.

The drug was then patented in 1996 and approved for its use in erectile dysfunction by the FDA or Food and Drug Administration on March of 1998. This was the first oral treatment approved to treat erectile dysfunction in the US. The drug soon became known as Viagra and was being publicly endorsed by US senator Bob Dole.

The British press said that Peter Dunn and Albert Wood were the inventors of the drug, put Pfizer disagrees. Their names are on the patent application for the drug, but Pfizer says this is only for convenience. Ian Osterloh oversaw the trials of Sildenafil and is one of the only persons named in the invention of Sildenafil citrate.

How to get Sildenafil citrate or Viagra

Numerous websites offer Sildenafil as Viagra and also offer online consultations though it is only available with a prescription; a simple questionnaire is completed to see if you are a good candidate for Viagra. Doctor’s offices all over the world offer the drug to many patients as well.

Viagra is a blue pill and has earned many nicknames over the year including, “the little blue pill” and “vitamin V” many aphrodisiacs call themselves “herbal Viagra” due to the overwhelming popularity of the drug.

The rise of Sildenafil Citrate (Viagra)

In 2000, Sildenafil (Viagra) sales accounted for 92 percent of the global market for prescribed erectile dysfunction pills. By the year 2007, Viagra’s share plunged about 50 percent mainly because of other Sildenafil citrate drugs including Cialis and Levitra entered the market. Some people even reported vision loss, but this occurred in patients also taking PDE5 inhibitors.

In February of 2007, it was announced that a pharmaceutical company largely known in the UK, called The Boots Company, would trial the over the counter sales of Viagra in stores in Manchester, England. Men between the ages of 30 and 65 would be eligible to buy four tablets after they consulted with a pharmacist.

Pfizer’s worldwide patents on Sildenafil will expire in 2011-2013. Even though sildenafil is known by many different names such as Viagra, it can treat a variety of diseases including erectile dysfunction, altitude sickness, pulmonary hypertension and use in sports and is used all over the world to cure such ailments.
